Cultural Identity Essay
This Cultural Identity essay was for my contemporary voices class my senior year. The purpose of this essay was to dig deep into your cultural background, and get more in touch with what you are, where you came from and how you are now. Doing this essay I learned a lot about my ethnicity, I found more interest in finding out more about my Guatemalan side than my Mexican side. Although both of my cultures are very important to me, Guatemalan ethnicity isn’t very common in the society I live in. In the 3rd paragraph I had to do a little bit of research on the Guatemalan culture and how it differentiates from other cultures. I feel that skill is very much required in many professional jobs.
Before we started our essays we had many group discussions and debates on ethnical terms like for example, Black vs. African American and Hispanic vs. Chicano vs. Latino. I learned many different things about Guatemalan culture for example the symbolic Quetzal bird and the myth behind it, and why it’s so sacred to the people of Guatemala. The skills I used when doing this essay was the ability to used Word Documents, research engines and also the basics of writing a 5 paragraph essay. Being able to write a good essay is one of the crucial things I’ve learned while being an SCT student. Writing good essays and doing research on certain topics is a very important skill to have when going off to college.
If I were to get the chance to do this paper over again I would go into more depth when it comes to my Mexican culture and also describe the differences between Hispanic, Chicano and Latino. I would like to let people also know that there is more of a variety of different Latin cultures not just Mexican, because many people are confused about this. There’s not a lot different that I would do to this essay, I put my personal experiences and also I put a lot of emotion into it.
